Speak Up Studio prides itself on offering high quality Speech and Drama tuition. We believe that every child is special. We love to see them learn and grow into confident young people. Children aged three to fifteen, whatever their backgrounds or talents, will learn valuable skills that will help them in school, and stay with them for life. Overcoming shyness, building self-esteem and learning to speak clearly are just some of the skills children will develop during the fun and engaging classes.
Whether your child is a budding stage star or a keen debater, outgoing, shy, or just wanting to have some fun, Speak Up Studio will guide and support them as they achieve their goals. We are passionate about enriching the lives of children through drama.
With programs tailored to specific age groups, Speak Up Studio’s programs help young people develop their verbal skills, voice projection and spontaneity through improvisation and performance. We believe in the power of books, poetry and drama and always aim to foster a love of reading and literature.
Just wanted to tell you that my son, who normally has one story for the day if that, talked all the way home about his drama lesson. He has a friend over from school too, but all he talked about was how much fun his morning was. He read the poem and talked about how he has to do a poem about dolphins next week etc etc. He said ‘Miss Jessie handles everyone really well’! And he came straight home and put his shirt on and is proudly showing the neighbours. So thank you. We look forward to him coming home like this every Friday!! – Maria, 2014
I like coming to speak up because of All the nice teachers and the encouragement that the teachers give you to perform on stage. It is something to look forward to during the day at school. Thank You Speak Up. I like the workshops and how the classes are put together, we always get lots of stuff done. – Ava, 2017
Speak Up Speech and Drama classes provide a safe environment for students to challenge themselves without feeling embarrassed or afraid of making a mistake. Drama games and improvisation are fun activities that allow students to stand up and present themselves without the pressure and hype of a “performance.”
Learning to speak well is one of the first steps to improving confidence and communication skills – every Speak Up
Speech and Drama class includes some vocal training as well as the opportunity for students to practice eye contact, concentration and listening skills.
Creating drama, inventing characters and telling stories are integral parts our classes. We incorporate a wide range of poetry and prose to engage and inspire students and regularly use arts and craft activities to create special props, costumes, or puppets, which the children use in performances.
I can’t thank you all (especially Miss Lauren) enough for the absolute joy you bring to Lucy’s life. She can’t wait to start another term. Libby – Mum, 2017
Our classes are inclusive and caring. Speak Up Studio does not cram 30 students from various age groups into one class – quite the opposite! Our classes are small and age group specific (no more than two grades in each group) to create positive and supportive atmosphere that encourages emotional and social development.
We are communication experts, and we pride ourselves on delivering high quality information to you on a regular basis. We try to batch information into regular newsletters so you aren’t bombarded with too many emails. Your child’s teacher will get in touch throughout the term to provide feedback on how they are going.
To Make Your Life Easy
We understand that you are busy! We aim to make the experience of coming to class as carefree as it can be! We offer a range of classes in convenient locations, online enrolments, regular email and text updates, and simple monthly payments!
The story of Speak Up Studio begins 2011 when Cathy Clur happened upon a gap in the market for quality group drama programs in Brisbane. Cathy was working in the film and television industry, and teaching speech and drama part time. She also had a vague interest in web design and wanted to teach herself how to build a website. Having experienced the power of speech and drama in her own life, Cathy decided to create a website centred around the benefits of speech and drama for children. She called it “Speak Up Studio” and it was a huge success!
Within three months, Cathy was receiving calls an emails from parents interested in what Speak Up Studio had to offer. Cathy was able to see some of the students individually, but her inadvertent market research indicated that parents really wanted group classes. Armed with this insight, the naivety of passion, and the confidence that all those years of drama had instilled in her, Cathy began planning her exciting new business!
In early 2012, Cathy had the opportunity to participate in the Australian Government’s New Enterprise Incentive Scheme (NEIS) and undertook an eight week business planning program. Speak Up Studio started its first group classes in term two, 2012 St Joseph’s Primary School in Corinda, with six students.
In 2012 Miss Maddie joined the Speak Up teaching team as a casual drama teacher. Maddie saw the potential in Speak Up and was promoted to a part time, and then a full time position. Maddie is now the Studio Manager, and has played a key role in the development of Speak Up’s education programs.
In January 2015, Speak Up Studio moved into to a beautiful studio space in Red Hill, Brisbane. 74 square metres of our very own space! This move marked the beginning of an exciting phase of Speak Up Studio, and provided an opportunity to share drama with more students than ever before. Three years later, Speak Up outgrew this studio and moved just down the road to its current home at 110 Windsor Road, Red Hill where we enjoy 250 square metres of teaching, learning and administration space, as well as an onsite cafe.
Speak Up Studio has developed a full primary drama syllabus and extensive series of creative workshops, which run successfully each school holidays. The studio has grown to nearly 500 students in weekly classes across 17 venues.
